Wild cassowary takes a stroll through Queensland couple’s living room

A north Queensland couple have shared the moment a wild cassowary wandered into their living room, at their home south of Cairns.

The uninvited dinner guest, classified as the world’s most dangerous bird, was snapped by Wongaling Beach residents Sue and Peter Leach.

"He has been walking past our place, through our yard and into the rainforest for almost four years now – I think he made a wrong turn,” Mrs Leach told the ABC.

"He wandered in very casually, he wasn't spooked at all, looked around."

At the sight of the enormous bird, the couple took cover behind the dining room table and out in the front yard.

The “stickybeak” cassowary soon left.

The southern cassowary can be found across southern Papua New Guinea and north-eastern Australia.

The species, which reaches heights of up to 2m, comes equipped with sharp dagger-like claws and has a reputation for delivering powerful kicks.

Human deaths resulting from cassowary attacks have been documented but are otherwise rare.

Of 221 cassowary attacks against humans and animals that took place in 2003, 150 were against humans, with one victim dying as a result.
