Authorities have been left baffled after a canal in Sydney's west transformed this afternoon.

The water, at Cooks River in Campsie, turned into a murky white slick.

Fire and Rescue crews at working to determine what the substance is. Fire and Rescue NSW

Fire and Rescue crews were called to the canal and said the liquid appears to be white paint and is running about two kilometres along the canal.

HAZMAT crews and the EPA is testing the substance.

They are hoping to stop it before it reaches the river by attempting to block it with booms.
