Where to get the best deal on a new phone plan

The telcos are pulling out all the stops to reel in new customers ahead of the anticipated release of the new iPhone.

Aldi is introducing a new pre-paid plan and revamping its data offering, giving them a competitive edge with some of the best plans in the market.

The new ALDImobile Jumbo plan, available from Wednesday, will offer 16 gigabytes of data, as well as unlimited calls and messages for $55 a month.

That deal includes 300 international minutes to 50 countries.

"You can get a great deal from the supermarkets and the lower players because they're offering the same network, they're offering the same value, they just don't have the retail storefronts that the big telcos have," tech expert Trevor Long said.

At Coles, spokeswoman Martine Aplins said this week there was a special of 20 percent off all Optus recharge prepaid plans.

She said the retailer's most popular plan was their $20 sim, which offered 2gb and unlimited calls and texts for 28 days.

At Woolworths, customers can pay $45 for 10gb of data, which includes unlimited talk and text to use over 30 days.

Vodafone's Ben Macintosh advised  customers to not sign a lock-in contract when shopping.

"Lock-in contracts are now a thing of the past," he said.

"Do not sign yourself up for a two-year sentence."

At Telstra, Kevin Teo said customers were streaming more video on their phones than ever before, making data a focal point of Telstra's new deals.
