A contestant on Wheel of Fortune in the US has baffled the show’s viewers and host by choosing some very strange letters but still managed to win the night.

Eschewing some of the more popular consonants like “S”, “T” or “R”, Nura Fountana caused a ripple of consternation on Tuesday’s show when she asked for a “Z”.

“Say that again for me. Did you say, ‘Z’?” host Pat Sajak asks in disbelief.

Unsurprisingly there are none, but undeterred, Ms Fountana then throws out an “X” during the same final speed round.

Ms Fountana also misses several chances to even name a letter in the round, leaving it to a rival contestant to come up with the answer to the puzzle, “Following footprints”.

Clearly puzzled, Sajak took the opportunity to quiz Ms Fountana about her letter choice after the round.

“May I ask you a question?” he asks.

“Now, you called some unusual questions in that round.”

To which she replied: “That’s what I saw.”

“Well, that was an unsatisfactory answer, but she’s not under oath there’s nothing I can do,” Sajak says.

Despite her baffling behaviour, Ms Fountana had come into the final round in the lead and ended up winning the episode.
