What's happening to the GST?

WHAT'S HAPPENING TO THE GST?

* From July 2017, the GST will apply to all products and services sold by vendors overseas into Australia

* Vendors with an Australian turnover over $75,000 will voluntarily charge, collect and remit the GST for digital and physical goods

* Treasurer Joe Hockey is confident big players like Amazon will take part, but can't guarantee smaller companies will comply

* Money raised goes to the general GST pool, no confirmation of how much will be raised

* GST remains for pads and tampons with several states rejecting Mr Hockey's proposal to remove it

* Treasurers agreed removing stamp duty on property sales would fuel further speculative buying in the housing market

* Commonwealth still developing options involving changes to the Medicare levy or the GST
