Whale head removed from Perth beach

It took an excavator and five hours of hard slog to remove the head of a sperm whale from a Perth beach.

The Department of Parks and Wildlife found the remains about 800m north of the Marmion Angling Club near Sorrento on Monday, prompting part of the beach to be closed.

The whale head, measuring three metres long and 1.5m wide, was removed on Tuesday.

Ranger Vaughn Chapple said heavy machinery had been used to remove the head, which weighed around five tonnes.

"It has taken five hours to remove the whale head, which is generally a third of the size of the entire whale's body," Mr Chapple said.

The head has been disposed of at an approved refuse site.
