Whale freed after becoming entangled off Sydney coast

A whale has been freed from a fishing net or drum line it became entangled in off Sydney's northern beaches.

An operation by the NSW Parks and Wildlife Service (NWPS) to release the animal was launched this morning after it became ensnared about one kilometre off Bilgola Beach.

"The NPWS whale disentanglement crew has reached the entangled whale off Dee Why and have successfully freed the whale," the spokesperson said.

"Congratulations to everyone involved for a successful outcome."

The whale is now expected to continue its journey south.

Marine Rescue NSW has been broadcasting warnings to boat users to watch out for the entangled whale.

Rescuers were initially hampered by rough seas but a spokesperson said they had succeeded in freeing the whale, which was accompanied by at least one other whale.

This month is a major whale migratory period as thousands of the animals make their way along the east coast to warming waters.
