Westpac said today online services have just been restored to its 13 million customers globally after an hours-long outage overnight.

The Australian bank apologised to customers for the online and mobile banking glitch and admitted it had taken too long to fix.

"Our mobile and online banking services are now restored and running as usual," Westpac said in a statement early today.

"We want to apologise to all our customers who were impacted by the issue overnight. We recognise this took too long to resolve and we thank customers for their patience."

Earlier, customers vented their anger at the bank when the problem which was caused by a routine technology upgrade, was first reported about 9.20pm yesterday.

Customers on social media said when they logged in they couldn't see any information about their accounts or cards.

"Any idea what's happening with Westpac online services?" one X user said.

"My account seems to have disappeared."

Outage tracking website Downdetector showed a spike in complaints relating to the "big four" bank from about 8.15pm yesterday, with as many as 10,400 reports of problems at one point.
