Largest cemetery approved in Sydney in 70 years, leaving locals unhappy
A huge block of land in Sydney's west will become the largest cemetery approved in the city in 70 years, but locals are not happy.
The soon-to-be Western Sydney Cemetery Complex is a 73-hectare block of land on Greendale Road in Wallacia, which is up for sale but has been approved to be a cemetery.
The cemetery will be along the Nepean River near sprawling cattle farms.

It could accommodate 775,000 burial plots, three-quarters of the total of Sydney's biggest cemetery at Rookwood.
Terry Haye lives opposite the planned cemetery.
Haye said he was concerned, not only because it's in his backyard, but because it was a flood plain.
"It goes underwater and it was several metres underwater during the last deluge," Haye said.

Melbourne University's Dr Hannah Gould said Sydney definitely needed new cemeteries.
"There have been no new cemeteries on crown land in 80 years... despite increases in population in Western Sydney," Gould said.
A 2021 report found all crown cemeteries will run out of burial space within 12 years.
