Sydney residents treated to first look at WestConnex

Residents have for the first time been given a behind-the-scenes look at the multi-billion dollar WestConnex project.

For almost one year, the old Alexandria Landfill has been undergoing a transformation into the St Peters Interchange.

Once it is complete, there will be a total of nine bridges over four levels.

More than 80 residents today visited the worksite and were guided through the different stages.

“I’m not sure what the pollution stacks mean for us being so close to them but It’s impressive from an engineering point of view,” St Peters resident Guido Warner told 9NEWS.

More than 400 workers are on site each day completing tunnelling, piling, excavation and earthworks.

“We want to be good neighbours in the St Peters community and the feedback we get from residents is the more that they know about the project the easier it is for them to make plans and get along with their life,” Community Engagement Manager for the new M5 Louise Bonny said.

On completion, it is estimated residents will be able to travel from Beverly Hills to St Peters in about ten minutes.

The new M5 will be open to traffic in early 2020.
