Weatherill blames feds for horror budget

South Australians are facing a horror state budget, but Premier Jay Weatherill says the federal government is to blame.

Speaking after cabinet on Monday, the premier said the "brutal" federal budget meant his government was facing tough choices for its June 19 budget.

Over the next four years, South Australia is facing $898 million in federal cuts, while over the next decade the state's schools and hospitals are threatened with funding cuts of $5.5 billion, the premier said.

"There is no doubt that we will be forced to make some unpopular decisions due to these cuts, as we seek to ensure the most vulnerable in our community do not suffer any further hardship," he said.

Asked if he was setting up South Australians for a "horror budget", the premier agreed.

He was asked where the state cuts would come from and if, for example, they would include closing hospital beds or laying off nurses.

"All those things have to be under consideration," he said.

"They are things we will be speaking about in the budget."

The cuts would flow directly from the federal budget and would be "liberal cuts", he added.

AS far as possible the government would honour commitments made to the South Australian people, but that was "obviously a difficult task", he said.
