Week of rain, storms coming to bushfire-hit states

Beleaguered firefighters have some relief on the horizon with a week or more of rain and storms coming to Queensland and New South Wales.

From today until potentially late next week, a low pressure trough is set to bring rain and thunderstorms daily to eastern Australia, Weatherzone has reported.

Projected falls of up to 20mm to 40mm could happen over northern NSW and southern Queensland, where firefighters have been battling recent blazes that have claimed homes and lives.

Heavier falls are likely to happen in northern NSW, Weatherzone said, forecasting a total of up to 100mm by next Friday.

Severe thunderstorms have also been forecast and locals are warned of the risk of flash floods.

Weatherzone said the rain, as well as "cooler and more humid easterly winds" would help firefighters manage or extinguish ongoing blazes.

About 30 fires apiece continue to burn in both Queensland and NSW. Several prepare to leave warnings are still in place across Queensland's Downs region, while all warnings in NSW are at advice level.

Temperatures across eastern Australia in general are also expected to dip, with Sydney unlikely to rise out of the mid-20 degree range, and Brisbane not expected to crack 30 in the next week or more.
