Sydney officially records wettest year on record

A record held for 72 years tumbled today as Sydney recorded its wettest year tracking back 164 years when records began.

This is one of four weather records broken across New South Wales as Australia's east coast was drenched today.

Shortly after 1pm today the city of Sydney clocked a yearly total of 2199.8mm of rain - and the deluge just keeps on coming.

The previous record was set in 1950 and sat at 2194mm.

The city has received 88mm rain since 9am.

Bourke in NSW has also recorded its wettest October day in 67 years.

Lake Cargelligo in NSW saw its largest October daily rainfall total in 37 years.

And Camden in Sydney's south-west observed 51.2mm in 24 hours, marking the wettest October day in 23 years.

Monthly rainfall totals from the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) show the wettest months this year were March and July.

These were the months where roads and homes in Western Sydney and the Hawkesbury were swallowed by muddy, brown floodwater.

And Sydney's record-breaking deluge shows no signs of letting up.

Yet another "serious" weather system - a trough and a cold front - will cross over NSW from Friday.

"Saturday is going to be our danger day," NSW Emergency Services and Resilience Minister and Flood Recovery Minister Steph Cooke said.

"Our catchments are saturated, our dams full, and rivers are already swollen.

"Any additional rainfall has the potential to cause riverine flooding and flash flooding."

The broken record comes less than a month after it was declared Australia had entered it's third consecutive La Nina event, which is predicted to hold until early 2023.
