Heavy rain and damaging winds will make a return to Queensland and New South Wales this week as an east coast low forms off the coast.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) confirmed the weather system is developing off Queensland's south-east coast and will bring rain and winds from Wednesday.

"The greatest impacts will be on the Queensland coast but it will produce showery conditions, strong winds and large waves along the northern NSW coast," BoM wrote, adding northern NSW should feel the affects of the system by Friday.

Initial modelling from Weatherzone forecasts widespread falls between 60mm and 80mm along the coasts of both states.

Coffs Harbour in northern NSW could receive 100mm to 150 mm of rain.

"Significant coastal erosion" will also be a risk as large waves pound the coastline.

With the rain event days away, the weather service said they will post more updates as they come.

The latest round of wet weather comes weeks after parts of NSW, including Sydney, flooded.

The BoM's five-day forecast shows showers have returned to the Harbour City.

Falls between 8mm and 15mm are forecast for Thursday, while 6mm to 10mm could fall on Friday.

Up to 20mm of rain could fall over Brisbane on Thursday and 20mm to 35mm of rain is forecast for the Queensland city on Friday.

Meanwhile, a high-pressure system strengthened over the nation's south east yesterday.

This will bring a run of cool days and frosty mornings, BoM said.
