Weather forecast Australia: Wind warnings in most states and rain spreading north from NSW

Most states are bracing for a windy end to the week, with showers spreading north for eastern states and balmy weather in store for the west.

A slow-moving trough in the east is triggering showers over north-east NSW and showers and storms over south-east Queensland.

Strong wind warnings are in place for most states today ahead of with varying temperatures in each of the capital cities.

While Brisbane is in for a wet weekend, Perth and Adelaide are expected to enjoy some sun today and over the next few days.

THE NATIONAL FORECAST

NSW and ACT

Showers, cool in the north-east. Mostly sunny, cool in the south-east. Mostly sunny, cool-to-mild in the west.

Sydney will finish the week mostly sunny with a low of 12C and top of 20C after west conditions brought significant rainfall to several areas.

A blanket of cloud associated with the north-moving trough has already delivered over 20mm of rain to a broad area of NSW, from the Central Tablelands and Mid North Coast.

Meldrum's 47mm during the 24 hours to 9am yesterday was its highest September daily total in 12 years. Dubbo (16.8mm) and Tamworth (15.4mm) also saw their wettest September day in four years during this period.

Canberra has increasing sunshine, with a low of 3C and top of 17C.

There's a strong wind warning today for Byron Coast, Batemans Coast and Eden Coast, and tomorrow for Batemans Coast and Eden Coast.

Victoria

Late shower, cool-to-cold in the south-west. Mostly sunny, cool-to-mild in the south-east. Mostly sunny, cool-to-cold in the north.

Melbourne has cloud increasing today, with a low of 11C and top of 20C.

There's a strong wind warning today for Port Phillip, West Coast, Central Coast and East Gippsland Coast.

South Australia

Showers, mild in the south-east. Mostly sunny, warm in central. Mostly sunny, warm-to-hot in the west and north.

Adelaide will be mostly sunny, with a low of 15C and summery top of 26C.

There's a strong wind warning today for the Lower South East Coast.

Tasmania

Late shower, cool in the south. Late shower, cool-to-cold in the north.

Hobart has rain developing, with a low of 6C and top of 19C.

There's a strong wind warning today for the Far North West Coast, Lower East Coast, South East Coast, South West Coast and Central West Coast.

Northern Territory

Sunny, hot in the NW Top End. Mostly sunny, mild-to-warm in Arnhem. Sunny, warm-to-very warm over the interior and south.

Darwin will be sunny today, with temperatures ranging from the low-to-mid 20s to mid-30s.

Queensland

The wet weather in NSW will spread up into Queensland today with heavy showers, and cool-to-mild conditions in the southeast.

Parts of south-east Queensland could see 30-50mm of rain between now and Saturday, with the heaviest falls likely to occur along the coast south of Fraser Island.

Showers will ease in southeast Queensland from Sunday as the trough weakens and moves further north.

There's a strong wind warning today for Fraser Island Coast, Sunshine Coast Waters, Moreton Bay and Gold Coast Waters, and tomorrow for Sunshine Coast Waters, Moreton Bay and Gold Coast Waters.

Western Australia

Mostly sunny, cool-to-cold in the southwest and south. Sunny, very warm in the northwest. Showers, very warm in the northeast.

Perth will be mostly sunny, with a low of 9C and top of 19C.

There's a strong wind warning today for Pilbara Coast West, Ningaloo Coast and Gascoyne Coast.
