October heat record to be threatened with South Australia forecast to hit 45 degrees this weekend

Temperatures in parts of South Australia could reach as high as 45 degrees this weekend, experts predict.

A mass of warm air, which has already caused temperatures to climb over 40 degrees in parts of Western Australia, will move south towards the end of the week.

Weatherzone believes the hottest weather will be seen on Sunday, with temperatures in South Australia expected to reach 45 degrees.

"Temperatures could challenge the SA record this weekend, with parts of the state's North West Pastoral District forecast to reach 45 degrees on Sunday," Weatherzone said.

Experts are also warning the hot, dry weather and winds will lead to increased bushfire danger in southern parts of Australia.

South Australia's capital Adelaide will not see the extreme heat, but will climb to a top of 31 degrees on Sunday.

The hottest temperature recorded in Australia in October was in Port Hedland in 2002, where the mercury hit 46.9 degrees.

The warmer weather will also hit some of Australia's major cities, although not to the same extent.

Sydney will reach highs of 32 degrees on Friday with chances of a thunderstorm, with temperatures then reaching 33 degrees on Monday, according to Weatherzone.

The harbour city will see temperatures hit 31 degrees on Tuesday, before up to 20mm of rain later in the day will see a cool change for the rest of the week.

Melbourne will reach 31 on Thursday before cooling over the weekend, while Canberra is forecast to reach the same temperature on Monday.
