A week of rain set to hit Sydney and NSW as heatwave ends

Sydney and parts of NSW face a week of showers and thunderstorms for the return to work, after a New Year heatwave fizzled out.

It's also set to be much cooler than it has been, with highs of 24 degrees today and tomorrow in central and eastern NSW, a hefty ten degrees cooler than on the weekend.

"Some of those storms could be severe," BOM Meteorologist Dean Narrmore, said.

It'll gradually warm up again towards the weekend reaching 29 degrees, but the showers will linger.

South-western parts of Western Australia will also see storms which will bring a risk of bushfires.

"There could be severe storms there and also elevated fire dangers," Narrmore said.

A fire warning has been issued for Midwest Inland, Yarra Yarra, Mortlock and Karroun.

"Hot to very hot and dry conditions will combine with fresh and gusty north-westerly winds and lead to elevated fire dangers ahead of a west to south-westerly change that will move over western parts during the afternoon," the BOM said.

The tropical Far North and Top End are also seeing storms, with more on the way.

The rest of Queensland will be dry but hot, with temperatures inland reaching 43 degrees around Birdsville.

Brisbane is also set to see showers move in from Wednesday which will hang about towards the weekend.

Adelaide and Melbourne will also both enjoy the sun this week, with temperatures up to the low 30s.
