We must redouble closing gap efforts: PM

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has cited improvements in infant mortality rates and higher levels of immunisation as signs the disadvantage gap between indigenous people and other Australians is being closed.

But the government had to redouble efforts to ensure effective engagement with indigenous communities to build trust and develop a respectful relationship.

"I can't stress enough how important it is to allow decisions to be made closer to the people and the communities," Mr Turnbull told a function, marking the 10th anniversary of Closing the Gap, in Canberra on Tuesday.
