NSW Police look for missing puzzle piece after human remains found in burnt out car

Police are working to piece together the moments that led up to skeletal remains being found inside a burning car in Sydney's south yesterday.

The blaze was extinguished by the Rural Fire Service after a person reported the incident after they left the Royal National Park and saw the car alight in the Waterfall Flat Carpark, south of Engadine.

Superintendent Craig Middleton confirmed the remains found inside the Toyota Rav4 were yet to be formally identified.

"We really don't know what has occurred and the circumstances leading up to the vehicle fire," Middleton said.

"I have no information to suggest there was foul play involved or it is organised crime related."

He said he needed members of the public with information in the lead up to the incident to come forward as it would help to solve "a really big piece of the puzzle".

"We haven't been able to determine the cause of the fire at this stage or any indication of what has caused the fire.

"We have been able to identify the owner of the vehicle but we have been unable to talk to that person at this stage."

The remains have been sent for forensic examination.

Police now want to speak to anybody who may have been in the Royal National Park area or travelled along the Princes Highway between Engadine and Waterfall between 6pm and midnight on Monday, July 3.

Anyone with dashcam footage or information in relation to a dark-coloured Toyota RAV4 is urged to call Sutherland police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or online.

The incident is not believed to be linked to a similar one on Tuesday morning in Sydney's west where human remains were also discovered in a burnt-out car.
