Wasps to control ants on Christmas Island

Micro wasps could be introduced to Christmas Island in a bid to control a super colony of yellow crazy ants.

National Parks director Sally Barnes says the ants have been on the island for decades, but their numbers have recently exploded following an increase in food supplies.

The agency wants to import small wasps as a biological control to destroy some food supply and hopes the plan will be under way by the end of 2015, Ms Barnes told a Senate estimates hearing in Canberra on Monday.
