The one chunk of Australia feeling winter’s bite this week
Most Australians are basking in relatively balmy winter temperatures this week - with one notable regional exception.
It’s properly cold over a large chunk of southern Western Australia, with Perth facing minimum temperatures under 10 degrees and maximums under 20 degrees for the coming seven days.

But as Weatherzone’s Anthony Sharwood explains, current weather conditions over the country have rendered that an exception to the national rule this week.
“A slow-moving high-pressure system is centred over the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand, and will be more or less parked there for the remainder of the working week,” he wrote.
“While a cold front is lashing the south-west of Western Australia this Tuesday, the Tasman high is forcing cold fronts down into the Great Australian Bight and further south, steering them away from south-eastern Australia.”
That’s left much of the south-east facing temperatures two to five degrees above the June average.
Sydney is braced for maximum temperatures in the low 20s through to next week, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, compared to the city’s average monthly maximum of 17 degrees for June.
Canberra, as usual, is chillier, but is still looking at tops in the mid- to high teens over the same time. Weatherzone put the capital’s June maximum at 13.2 degrees.
Melbourne, meanwhile, is currently forecast to hit 19 degrees both today and on Friday, compared to its average June top of about 14 degrees.
Adelaide will also stay in the high teens for most of the week, with a forecast spike to 23 degrees on Friday.
That’s more than seven degrees above the monthly average for Adelaide, which is 15.8 degrees.
Hobart will also hover around the mid to high teens, peaking at 18 today and on Saturday, compared to its average June top of 12 degrees.
Brisbane and Darwin will hew closer to - though slightly above - their average temperatures for the month this week, with Brisbane in the early 20s and Darwin in the early 30s.
