WHAT THEY SAID AFTER A 56-YEAR-OLD MAN WAS ACQUITTED OF THE MANSLAUGHTER OF TEENAGER ELIJAH DOUGHTY BUT JAILED THREE YEARS FOR CAUSING HIS DEATH IN A ROAD CHASE:

* Chief Justice Wayne Martin on the victim impact statement by Elijah's mother Petrina James: "I have no doubt the death of her son at the tender age of 14 has had a devastating effect and will continue to have profound ramifications for her and her family indefinitely".

* Prosecutor David Davidson: "It (the chase) was just too quick. On his own admission, it was too close".

* Defence counsel Seamus Rafferty: "It was simply an appalling, ill conceived, spur of the moment decision. This incident is on a continual loop in his head. He just can't forget it. Obviously, he wishes he could have his time again."

* Elijah's family said through a liaison officer they felt the sentence was inadequate.

* Aboriginal elder Ben Taylor outside court: "If he was a white kid there would have been an uproar, but when a black kid gets killed by a white fella, there's no law."
