Voters hit polls in anticipated landslide Western Australia election

Polls have opened in Western Australia with an election which has been all but called for Premier Mark McGowan's Labor Party.

Voters will queue up from 8am to 6pm local time (11am to 9pm AEDT) to cast a ballot.

But Opposition Leader Zak Kirkup has conceded he won't win, with polling showing a landslide victory for Mr McGowan.

"As I get around the state, many West Aussies are telling me Mark McGowan's job is safe," Mr Kirkup said a few weeks ago.

"We have to acknowledge that, because I don't want to treat people like mugs."

Mr Kirkup holds his own seat by the narrowest of margins, and the 34-year-old said he would step down from politics if he loses his electorate.

Some polling forecasts have indicated the Liberals could be reduced to just three seats in the lower house.

But Mr McGowan has been reluctant to hint that he has the election in the bag.

"This is one of the most important elections, if not the most important election, in living memory," he said today.

"I'd encourage everyone to go out and vote for your very strong and stable and experienced WA Labor team."

Mr McGowan said his party's plans were "achievable and affordable".

"We've obviously been through a very traumatic past year," he said.

"It's been an affirmation for me of the great spirit of our state."

Mr McGowan's electoral fortunes have been buoyed by voter approval of his handling of the coronavirus epidemic and the economy.
