Western Australia rocked by 4.7-magnitude earthquake

An earthquake rocked the Lake Muir region in Western Australia early this morning.

The 4.7 magnitude quake hit about 12.30am local time, and was recorded at a depth of 5 kilometres. It could be felt more than 100 kilometres away.

Senior seismologist Jonathan Bathgate said the tremor was an aftershock from the magnitude 5.7 earthquake that struck the region on September 16th.

“It’s the biggest aftershock in the sequence we’ve had so far,” he said.

Mr Bathgate said the latest tremor was felt in Albany, Walpole and Frankland River.

“People are saying it gave them a good shake,” he said.

There have been around 400 aftershocks since the September earthquake.  There have been no reports of damage.
