WA treasurer fights council change

The West Australian treasurer is trying to fight council merger changes in his electorate, calling on locals to back alternatives.

The forced metropolitan amalgamations have proved highly contentious - but appear unstoppable - with the councils of Subiaco, South Perth, Serpentine-Jarrahdale and Peppermint Grove recently losing a Supreme Court challenge.

Mike Nahan, the state member for Riverton, says he's "extremely" disappointed the Local Government Advisory Board chose a boundary for his electorate that splits three suburbs between the cities of Gosnells and Melville.

"I previously raised my concerns with the board when this boundary was originally proposed as I believe it to be illogical," the treasurer said in a newsletter to residents.

While Local Government Minister Tony Simpson could not amend the boundary, and could only accept or reject the board's recommendation, Dr Nahan said there was still opportunity for change.

"There are other means where minor boundary adjustments can be made," he said.

"I am currently liaising with the City of Melville and the City of Gosnells in an effort to move the boundary, however I need your help."

Dr Nahan has urged his electorate to complete a survey indicating where they'd prefer the boundary to be placed.
