Power cuts continue after WA storm

About 5000 properties remain without power after stormy weather in Western Australia's South West region and Perth.

Strong winds brought down trees, while debris flew into the overhead electricity network causing a high number of fallen powerlines and damaged power poles, particularly in Perth.

Western Power said about 60,000 customers were without electricity at the height of the storm on Saturday morning, but restoration work was continuing.

The storms created 750 hazards across the Perth electricity network - nearly double the average - and crews had to attend every site, while more than 43,000 calls were made to Western Power's Perth-based contact centre.

Western Power acting chief executive Guy Chalkley said the conditions crews faced were immensely challenging.

"It's been our first big test of the winter storm season," he said on Sunday.

"Many of our customers experienced outages yesterday and some continue to be without power today, but rest assured we are working hard to find the faults, repair damage and restore electricity supplies as soon as we can."

Meanwhile, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services has cancelled the severe weather warning for the Goldfields, Midlands, Great Southern and South West regions.
