An information technology contractor at Western Australian primary schools has been charged after he allegedly photographed students without permission.

Police have charged the 21-year-old man with indecently recording a child under 13 and possessing child exploitation material, but say there is no indication he had physically touched any children.

Education Department director-general Lisa Rodgers said in a letter to parents the images were found on his personal electronic devices and were taken in the students' day-to-day school environment

"Please be assured that police have advised me that the images are not of an intimate nature," Ms Rodgers said.

The man no longer works for the IT company and is not permitted in any WA schools after having his Working with Children Check card cancelled as a result of the allegations.

He is due to appear in court on July 17 and police say the investigation is ongoing.
