An officer has been stabbed in the leg with a knife outside a Perth police station.

The sergeant was trying to subdue a 46-year-old man, who was threatening self-harm, at 3am on Friday outside the Gosnells station.

The officer was taken to Armadale Hospital, where he received several stitches.

The man was taken to hospital for a health assessment and has been charged with going armed in public to cause fear and unlawful wounding.

WA Police Union acting president Brandon Shortland said the officer was "extremely lucky" and the union was providing welfare support to him and others involved.

"This incident, and the one in Yokine earlier in the week, clearly shows the dangerous and dynamic situations police officers face on a daily basis," he said.

A policewoman suffered serious leg injuries in Yokine on Tuesday when a man allegedly rammed his car into her.
