A pedophile who has repeatedly abused young children will be freed from prison next week after a Perth judge granted him supervised release.

Andrew Peter Stephenson abused two children, aged five and eight, between 1997 and 1998, and filmed himself abusing a friend's five-year-old daughter in 2004.

The 50-year-old was also convicted in 2010 of possessing child pornography over stories he started writing while in prison, with the sentencing judge describing the content as "disgusting and depraved".

West Australian Supreme Court Justice Jeremy Allanson reviewed Stephenson's case ahead of the completion of his sentence this month.

On Thursday, Justice Allanson determined Stephenson was a serious danger to the community, but could be managed under a five-year supervision order.

Stephenson will be subject to more than 30 conditions, including electronic monitoring and having no contact with children under the age of 16.

Justice Allanson said psychiatric evidence suggested Stephenson was unlikely to offend impulsively.

"Even without further treatment, a sexual offence against a stranger is most unlikely," he said.

"With treatment, ultimately he should be able to manage himself and he is well along that path."

Justice Allanson added that Stephenson's treatment needs could be met without requiring him to be in custody.
