Search for man, 83, who failed to return after going prospecting near outback town

Police are searching for an 83-year old man who is missing in outback Western Australia.

Trevor McDonald went prospecting in the Meekatharra area, eight hours drive north east of Perth.

The area is famous for gold deposits.

He split from his wife to search in different areas, but failed to return to the pair's caravan yesterday afternoon as planned.

His wife alerted police at 7pm yesterday after going to a local farm for help.

The area they were in is about 50km from Meekatharra, and about 5km south of the Bluebird Mine.

WA Police are using planes and drones to search for him, and are appealing for motorists who might have seen him to come forward.

"Part of the search area includes a section of Great Northern Highway," WA Police, said.

"Police are asking any motorists who saw anyone walking or resting along the side of the highway, wearing a green/black checked flannel shirt and black jeans, to call Police on 131 444."
