WA man has meth sentence quashed

A man sentenced to 11 years in jail for his role in a meth operation, which also included former high-flying AFL player manager Angelos Papadopoulos, has had his conviction overturned following an appeal.

Anthony La Bianca and Papadopoulos, who represented Eagles champions Glen Jakovich and Dean Kemp in the 1990s, were sentenced in the West Australian District Court last year, with each handed a minimum term of nine years.

The pair had stood trial accused of possessing about $1 million worth of methylamphetamine with intent to sell or supply.

Police pulled the pair over after the car driven by La Bianca was spotted moving erratically in Joondalup in July 2016.

The 986 grams of methylamphetamine, which ranged in purity from 80 to 88 per cent, was found in a sealed plastic bag inside a green environmental shopping bag at Papadopoulos' feet.

La Bianca took his case to the WA Court of Appeal, presenting several grounds of appeal including that the judge erred in her directions to the jury and the verdict was not supported by the evidence at trial.

On Wednesday, La Bianca's conviction was quashed.
