West Australian Labor state secretary Simon Mead has resigned.

Speculation has been mounting that Mr Mead would be ousted from the position before his contract expired but WA Labor leader Mark McGowan says Mr Mead has advised the party's state administrative committee of his resignation.

Mr McGowan praised Mr Mead for his management of the ALP's finances and his work on the 2013 election campaign, in which the Barnett Liberal government was returned.

"I have no doubt Simon will continue to play an important part in Labor's future success and I wish him and his family all the very best," Mr McGowan said in a statement on Monday night.

A new secretary will be elected in coming weeks, he said.
