WA Labor launches monster debt campaign

Today's episode of West Australian politics was brought to you by the letter D for debt and the number 31 billion.

It's a lesson Labor hopes voters will pay attention to now that the Barnett government has unleashed what the opposition calls "The Debt Monster".

In its latest post-budget stunt, the opposition has hired a Cookie Monster suit to give the state's ailing financial position a life of its own.

The Debt Monster appears in a low-budget video with Labor politicians Ben Wyatt and Rita Saffioti, who criticise Premier Colin Barnett for waking it up with his out-of-control spending.

"Soon the debt monster will be rampaging through a suburb near you," Mr Wyatt says.

The monster also has its own Twitter account and has appeared around Perth sites, including the contentious Elizabeth Quay that it calls home.

Mr Wyatt said the monster was making fun of the state's real budget issues but would not say how Labor planned to kill it.

He said the opposition's policies would be announced before the 2017 election.

Political analyst Harry Phillips told AAP the unusual campaign was not likely to win Labor any swinging voters, but it was a good way to get people who weren't normally interested in politics talking about the key issues of debt and traffic congestion.

Treasurer Mike Nahan announced a $2.7 billion deficit and a net debt projection of about $31 billion for 2015/16 in his second budget earlier this month.

While there has been little reaction on Twitter to the Debt Monster, some users have scoffed at the Sesame Street spoof.

"This childish prop you are hanging your hat on does nothing for your credibility," one man tweeted.
