A Bandyup Women's Prison inmate has been taken to hospital for smoke inhalation after a cell fire caused the evacuation of the West Australian prison.

The fire, which burnt through the inmate's bed and personal belongings, was reported just before 8am on Thursday morning according to a Corrective Services Department statement.

Inmates were evacuated to a safe location by prison staff and assessed for smoke inhalation, while one was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.
