WA drivers can't merge, use roundabouts

West Australian drivers believe road users need more education in five areas including merging, using roundabouts and indicating while changing lanes, according to a survey by RAC.

RAC general manager Will Golsby said the survey showed driver education needed more funding in the upcoming WA budget.

About 44 per cent of drivers said other road users did not know how to merge or give way, with 76 per cent saying it needed more education.

Just over half of those surveyed said other drivers could not navigate roundabouts correctly, with one in three admitting they also did not know what to do.

Mobile phone use in cars was the third most recognised problem and 45 per cent nominated changing lanes as an issue.

WA has the worst road fatality rate in the nation with the majority of deaths linked to speeding.

Despite being eager to send other drivers back to school they were less likely to admit they too could use a refresher course.

Mr Golsby said the results were alarming and showed WA drivers were not confident in the level of education provided to them and their fellow motorists.

"Tackling our state's tragic road toll and the thousands of serious injuries every year is crucial, and driver education is a critical part of that," he said.

He hopes the state government will listen to driver feedback and direct funding from the Road Trauma Trust to education.
