An almost 70,000 hectare scar has been burnt into Western Australia's South West, with a NASA satellite image capturing the extent of the damage caused by the recent deadly bushfire.

The false-colour image was taken on January 16 by an imaging instrument onboard the Terra Satellite, with unburnt vegetation appearing red.

The bushfire destroyed 162 homes and almost completely destroyed the town of Yarloop, killing two men.
