WA airport re-opened after suspicious item

An airport in Western Australia's Pilbara region has been reopened after being evacuated over a suspicious item.

Airport security identified a suspicious item in the carry-on luggage of a man in his 50s who was due on a flight to Perth at 8.40am on Friday.

"Karratha police attended and the airport was evacuated as a precaution," WA Police said in a statement.

"The bag containing the item was secured and with the assistance of Department of Fire and Emergency Services and the Karratha Airport management, it was removed from the airport and taken to a location away from the public."

After inspection under the guidance of the bomb squad, the item was declared safe.

The passenger who brought the item was questioned and no further action was taken, police said.

"There will be delays but the public are now allowed access," Karratha Police tweeted.
