Vic man charged over WA fireworks bushfire

A Victorian has been charged with setting off the fireworks which sparked a bushfire in Western Australia's south that burnt 2100 hectares over 10 days.

The Many Peaks fire started at Normans Beach campsite about 10pm on January 1 and spread as far as Betty's Beach campsite, destroying rare flora and fauna, and Western Power infrastructure.

The firefighting operation cost about $95,000 and also placed a water pumping station critical to Albany's drinking supply under threat, police said.

A 24-year-old man has been charged with breaching duty as a person in charge of a source of ignition and not using reasonable care or taking reasonable precautions to avoid lighting a fire.
