Up to two years jail for graffiti vandals

Graffiti vandals could be jailed for up to two years and fined $24,000 under tough new vandalism laws set to be introduced to the West Australian parliament.

Police Minister Liza Harvey said offenders could have property confiscated, including smart phones and laptops, if the items were found to have been used to "record and transmit" acts of vandalism, while mandatory community-based clean-up orders were the minimum penalty.

Ms Harvey said the Public Transport Authority would be empowered to ban serial offenders from buses, trains and train stations after the state government spent more than $7 million on graffiti removal in 2013-14.
