Three Perth officers stood down after positive drug tests

Three police officers have been stood down after they tested positive for ice and amphetamines during tests carried out at suburban Perth police stations.

West Australia Police Internal Affairs Unit conducted 200 tests across five stations on Monday.

Three constables returned a presumptive positive result for the drugs and the samples have been sent off for further testing.

Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan says there's a zero tolerance policy for drug use in the police force.

"Officers make critical decisions under duress, and they must not be affected by illicit substances or alcohol," Commissioner O'Callaghan said.

"Monday's day of action by Internal Affairs should send a sobering warning to any officer using illicit substances at any time."

New regulations to allow random and targeted drug and alcohol testing were introduced in December 2011.

Since then, 11 officers have tested positive for alcohol and seven for illicit drugs, which include cannabis, ice, MDMA and anabolic steroids.
