Support for WA no fault insurance scheme

Calls are mounting for a no fault third party insurance scheme in WA in light of a young car crash victim whose family is battling to pay for his care.

Warrick Proudlove was left with catastrophic injuries after a car in which he was a passenger struck a horse near Mr Barker in July 2011.

His family was forced to attempt to sue the driver because they had no other way to pay for his rehabilitation and round-the-clock care.

But the bid failed, with their claim dismissed on Wednesday.

The state government is now being urged to introduce a no fault third party insurance scheme, which would add $109 a year to car registration costs.

It supports the idea in principle, with the Insurance Commission of WA calling for public comment after releasing a green paper on the proposal last month. Submissions close on December 24.

On ABC radio on Thursday, pensioners called to say they'd be happy to pay extra for the scheme, also expressing sympathy to the Proudloves.

"What it will take to make this happen is a show of overwhelming support for this from West Australians so the government knows they will suffer by not making it happen," former National Disability Services WA manager Terry Simpson said.

WA and Queensland are the only states that do not have such a scheme.
