Students suspended over Perth schoolyard beating

Two girls have been suspended over a disturbing schoolyard beating in Perth's south.

Video shows a student being stalked, harassed, repeatedly punched and kicked in the head - leaving her cowering on the ground.

At first the victim can be seen trying to ignore the onslaught and keep walking, but the violence escalates.

The student behind the camera can be heard laughing and other teens don’t stop to help.

The attack unfolded at Gilmore College in Kwinana last Monday, the victim somehow escaping with minor injuries.

Her attacker and the girl filming were suspended.

A whopping 38 more students were suspended from the same school for physical aggression in term one alone.

Wanting to avoid the violence, last year 18-year-old Monique Lee left Gilmore College after just three weeks, and repeated taunts led to her younger brother failing classes.

“They come home from school and they're talking about fights happening almost every day and the school going into lockdown,” Monique said.

The WA Department of Education says parents of bullies need to step up.

"Something has to change in the attitudes of some young people who are coming to school intent on causing harm to others - schools can't do that alone," spokesperson Stephen Baxter said.

The number of students being suspended from school is on the rise across WA.

4.7 percent of WA students were suspended from school last year - up from 4.3 percent the year before.

There were also 783 students deemed a "severe educational risk", meaning they've been suspended from school eight or more times in one year; those students were up a whopping 20 percent.
