Second man jailed over WA roo killings

A second man has been jailed over the torture and killing of two kangaroos in a group attack in WA.

Ricky Ian Swan, 28, is one of four men associated with a gang who were charged over the attacks earlier this year.

One of the kangaroos was burnt, shot in the eye, spat on and punched with knuckledusters.

The other kangaroo was stabbed more than 20 times and kicked in the head.

Swan was sentenced in Joondalup Magistrates Court on Friday to 12 months in prison and must serve five months.

The remaining seven months was suspended and he will have to serve the term in full if he offends again within 10 months.

Earlier this week, Luke Kevin Dempster, 26, who had the most charges of the four men, was jailed for two years and will be eligible for parole after serving one year.

Dempster argued he was trying to ingratiate himself with the gang, but the court heard he was thrown out of the group after media reporting of the cruelty, and sported a black eye at his first court appearance.

He did not reveal to police the identity of others who were involved, and have not been charged, for fear of what the gang might do to him and his family.

Dempster was also charged over the torture of a chicken, which he set alight with accelerant then blew up with an explosive.

Dylan Leslie Griffin, 22, has entered guilty pleas and will face court again on January 14.

Ben Jaydon Malpuss, 26, indicated last month he would plead guilty to all seven of his charges and is due in court on Monday.
