Rayney lawyer urges cops to break silence

Lloyd Rayney's defamation lawyer says now that the former Perth barrister has been cleared of all criminal charges, WA Police should be able to speak about his estranged wife's murder.

Mr Rayney was acquitted last week of enlisting a surveillance expert to illegally intercept Corryn Rayney's phone calls days before her August 2007 murder, after a judge ruled that he had no case to answer midway through the trial.

He was acquitted of Ms Rayney's murder in 2012 and a subsequent appeal was also dismissed.

Attention has now turned to a multi-million-dollar defamation claim after police named Mr Rayney the prime and only suspect in the Supreme Court registrar's murder.

Mr Rayney's lawyer Martin Bennett said police could comment on the murder investigation and calls for an independent inquiry without it affecting defamation proceedings.

"They could come out, speak about it and deal with it because all (their defamation defence) focuses on his conduct beforehand," he told The Sunday Times newspaper.

Mr Rayney said he always knew the telecommunications charges would fail, adding that the successful no case submission was "extremely embarrassing" for the prosecution.

"For the last eight years, I have always known that I hadn't committed any crime and that the prosecution case would be thrown out, but I had no choice but to wait for that to happen," he said.

If Mr Rayney wants to practise law again, he must give the Legal Practice Board board 42 days notice.
