Closing submissions have begun in Lloyd Rayney's long-running multimillion dollar defamation trial over him being named the "prime" and "only" suspect in his wife's murder.

The barrister is suing the state of Western Australia over comments made by Detective Senior Sergeant Jack Lee in September 2007 following the death of Supreme Court registrar Corryn Rayney, whose body was found buried at Kings Park a month earlier.

Mr Rayney was acquitted of murdering the mother-of-two in 2012 and an appeal was dismissed in 2013.
