Rare snow falls in WA's south

Winter is here and it has brought a rare dusting of snow to Western Australia.

Locals and tourists taking the 6km round-trip trek up to Bluff Knoll, in WA's Great Southern region, found the peak of the Stirling Range snow-capped on Sunday morning.

Bluff Knoll, which is 1095m above sea level, is the third highest peak in WA and one of the few places in the state where it can actually snow on the rare occasion.

It is the first “significant snowfall” the area has seen in years, Weatherzone meteorologist Rob Sharpe told 9news.com.au.

Mr Sharpe told locals to “enjoy it while it lasts”.

“There’s a chance that they’ll get a little bit more snow on Wednesday, but it’s a bit hard to say, it might not be cold enough,” he said.

“It’ll be a bit touch and go.”

Two mates made the trek up the mountain and shared photos to Facebook from their snow day. 

The friends built a snowman and even partook in the tradition of being photographed "in the buff on the Bluff".
