Rally marks year since WA death in custody

A rally will be held in Perth to mark one year since the death of Aboriginal woman Julieka Dhu in police custody.

Ms Dhu, 22, died on August 4 last year after being held at the South Hedland Police Station because she reportedly owed about $1000 in unpaid fines.

Police said at the time that after complaining of feeling ill, Ms Dhu was taken to hospital three times and died on the final visit.

The Deaths In Custody Watch Committee WA will hold a rally on Tuesday, renewing calls for action from the state government to get answers about what happened to Ms Dhu and to prevent anything similar happening again.

Premier Colin Barnett previously said he had met with Ms Dhu's mother and grandmother, and assured them there would be a coronial inquest with public findings.
