Puppy farming will be stopped in Western Australia if the Labor party is successful in the March state election.

Leader Mark McGowan said on Tuesday the party would introduce mandatory standards for dog breeding and a centralised registration system.

More than 500 puppies and dogs needed rehoming in WA on any given day, he said.

RSPCA WA president Lynne Bradshaw welcomed the announcement and encouraged people to adopt animals from approved shelters or rescue organisations if giving them as a gift this Christmas.
