Porter's cabinet role raises WA GST hopes

The elevation of former West Australian treasurer Christian Porter to the federal cabinet should mean the state gets its fair share of the GST, the state Labor opposition says.

Mr Porter complained to a joint party room meeting last year that WA was not getting enough from the GST distribution, an argument that failed to sway then-federal treasurer Joe Hockey.

But in the wake of Sunday's cabinet reshuffle, WA opposition treasury spokesman Ben Wyatt said Mr Porter would be able to "resolve the long-standing issue".

"I think it's fair to say that Western Australians would expect the GST issues to be resolved in the next 12 months," Mr Wyatt said of Mr Porter, the newly-appointed social services minister.
