A 47-year-old Northern Territory man has faced court after he was allegedly caught trying to smuggle up to three kilograms of cocaine into Perth.

Australian Federal Police said the man was selected for a baggage examination when he arrived on a flight from Kuala Lumpur on Monday morning.

White powder was found hidden inside metal casings for car parts, and initially tested positive for cocaine.

Further forensic testing will be conducted to determine the exact weight and purity of the substance.

After the man faced Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday, the matter was adjourned until March 6 while he seeks legal advice.

The maximum penalty for the offence is 25 years imprisonment and/or an $850,000 fine.
